The program will explore the life and work of M.W.H. “Alphabet” Collins\, including his role in founding the Georgia Institute of Genetics. Following the lecture\, attendees are invited to the Bartow History Museum for the unveiling of a new sculpture of Collins created by Julia Trawick Knight\, which will later be installed on the Cartersville campus of Georgia Highlands College. \nAdmission:\n\nFree and open to the public\, with refreshments provided\, and reservations are encouraged\n\nAbout the Speakers\nMary Norton has been an active and dedicated member of the Etowah Valley Historical Society since 1972. Alongside Dr. Bob Norton\, she has provided decades of leadership\, conducted in-depth historical research\, and delivered engaging presentations and events at Valley View. Her commitment to preserving and sharing local history has earned her recognition\, including the EVHS Lifetime Achievement Award. \nJulia Trawick Knight is a figurative sculptor with extensive experience in both private and public commissions. She developed her artistic foundation through studies at the University of the South in Sewanee\, Tennessee; Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota\, Florida; and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her early influences include classical Greek and Roman sculpture\, European works from the Renaissance through the modern era\, and American art of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nKnight further refined her style through mentorships with Leslie T. Posey\, Eugene Daub\, and\, most significantly\, Stanley Bleifeld in Pietrasanta\, Italy. These experiences helped her develop a distinctive voice while honing her technical skill. \nHer notable works include Swept Under the Rug at the McKissick Museum in Columbia\, South Carolina; a sculpture of President Jimmy Carter at the Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville\, Georgia; and numerous public works throughout Georgia\, as well as a statue of Rosa Parks in Montgomery\, Alabama. \nGet Your Tickets Here

DESCRIPTION:Hands-On Barn Quilt Workshop Comes to Bartow History Museum!\nJoin us at the Bartow History Museum for a Barn Quilt Painting Class as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by creating a beautiful patriotic 2×2 work of art that you can display indoors or outdoors. No experience is necessary. \nParticipants will choose one of the quilt patterns displayed below\, and we will prepare each lightweight\, weather-resistant ACM board in advance with the selected design already drawn for painting. Paints and supplies will be provided. When properly sealed\, your finished barn quilt will withstand rain or shine\, making it perfect for outdoor display. Class size is limited. Please wear clothing you do not mind getting paint on and bring a hair dryer with a cool setting. DESCRIPTION:Voices and Votes: Democracy in America Exhibition Opens July 23 at Bartow History Museum\nWe are proud to host Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition presented in partnership with Georgia Humanities\, on view July 23 through September 5\, 2026. \nThe exhibition explores the evolution of American democracy\, civic participation\, and the expansion of voting rights over nearly 250 years. Through artifacts\, photographs\, archival media\, and interactive displays\, it examines how the United States has worked to build a government “of\, by\, and for the people\,” while also highlighting the conflicts\, milestones\, and movements that have shaped civic life. \nAs part of Museum on Main Street\, a national program of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service\, this exhibition brings public history programming to rural communities through partnerships with state humanities councils and local institutions. The Georgia tour is supported by Georgia Humanities\, Oglethorpe Power\, Georgia Transmission\, Georgia System Operations\, and the United States Congress. \nThe opening celebration begins at 6:00 p.m. on July 23 at the Booth Western Art Museum with Voices In American History: Words and Music From Our Nation’s Past\, narrated by Dr. Shannon Bontrager. Attendees will also learn about the Help America Vote Act and how federal reforms transformed election administration and the voting experience nationwide. \nDiscover how advancements in voting technology have shaped public confidence\, accessibility\, and election administration over time. DESCRIPTION:Experience America’s Story Through Music with Sparky and Rhonda Rucker\nJoin the Bartow History Museum for From Spirituals to Freedom: Building America\, a powerful musical performance by Sparky and Rhonda Rucker at The Grand Theater. \nThis special program is part of the By the People: Conversations Beyond 250\, a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. The initiative was developed by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.  The performance is free and open to the public. \nTake a musical journey through America’s past as Sparky and Rhonda Rucker blend music\, storytelling\, and history to explore how spirituals\, folk songs\, and traditional music have shaped American culture and preserved the stories of resilience\, struggle\, freedom\, and hope. Through captivating performances and engaging narratives\, audiences will discover how music has served as both a historical record and a powerful force for social change. \nThis inspiring performance offers a meaningful look at the people\, events\, and movements that helped build the nation while celebrating the enduring role of music in the American experience. \nAbout the Performers\nJames “Sparky” Rucker is an acclaimed folk musician\, storyteller\, and historian who has spent more than 50 years preserving and performing American folk traditions. A Knoxville\, Tennessee native\, Sparky has released 16 albums\, contributed to Grammy-nominated recordings\, and appeared on nationally recognized programs including NPR’s Mountain Stage\, Morning Edition\, and A Prairie Home Companion. \nA participant in the Civil Rights Movement\, Sparky worked with organizations including SNCC\, SCLC\, and the Poor People’s Campaign\, and collaborated at the Highlander Center alongside leaders such as Rosa Parks and Myles Horton. He has performed at renowned venues including the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, while leading educational programs at schools\, festivals\, and cultural institutions across the country. \nRhonda Rucker is a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, author\, and educator who performs alongside Sparky. Skilled in guitar\, banjo\, piano\, harmonica\, and percussion\, she blends Appalachian folk\, blues\, gospel\, and original compositions into performances that celebrate history\, culture\, and community. \nBefore pursuing music and storytelling full time\, Rhonda practiced internal medicine as a physician. DESCRIPTION:Preserving the Past: Historic Cemetery Workshop Teaches Care for Bartow’s Stories in Stone!\nThe Bartow History Museum invites community members\, history enthusiasts\, genealogists\, and preservation advocates to discover the importance of protecting local history during the Historic Cemetery Preservation Workshop on Saturday\, September 12\, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. \nLed by preservationist Paige Jennings\, this hands-on workshop will explore the history and significance of historic cemeteries while providing participants with practical techniques for the proper care and preservation of historic headstones and markers. \nThe morning will begin at the Bartow History Museum\, where Jennings will discuss the cultural importance of cemeteries\, common causes of monument deterioration\, and preservation methods that help protect these irreplaceable landmarks. Following the discussion\, participants will travel to Puckett Cemetery in Emerson\, Georgia\, for an on-site demonstration and hands-on instruction in proper cleaning and maintenance techniques. \nHistoric cemeteries serve as important records of the people\, communities\, and events that shaped our past. Through this educational program\, participants will gain valuable preservation skills while helping ensure these meaningful places remain protected for future generations. \nWhether you are interested in genealogy\, local history\, historic preservation\, or simply want to learn how to care for these important community landmarks\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with history in a hands-on way. \nSpace is limited\, and advance registration is encouraged.
