SUMMARY:Pox and Pig Iron - Zoom Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1849\, smallpox had broken out at the Etowah Iron Works and along with a concurrent outbreak in Atlanta caused a panic which swept across Upper Georgia. Trade and travel throughout the Georgia Piedmont and Upcountry came to a screeching halt. Town commissioners and count magistrates lead the charge to protect the health of their citizens through the implementation of various quarantine and smallpox prevention measures. The presentation by researcher Matthew Grambling\, will examine the ways in which antebellum Georgia confronted\, coped\, and overcame the threat of infectious disease in their communities as well as the role of local governments in advancing the cause of public health among their citizenry in combating the smallpox panic. It will also provide a glimpse into the practice of southern medicine in antebellum Bartow County and Upper Georgia.  Please note this is a virtual lecture offered on  Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Saving our History & Heritage\nJoin us on Zoom.  This is part of our on-line lecture programming.  Leslie Barker Thomas presents Saving Our History and Heritage. Thomas will discuss the importance of preservation of Cherokee history.  In addition\, she will talk about what the Trail of Tears Association does to preserve the history\, what has been done to sign sites\, and what sites are in our area. \nThomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the President.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association\, which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. For more information on the Georgia Trail of Tears Association\, visit www.gatrailoftears.com. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nMember tickets are free and non-member tickets are $6.50.  Tickets \nGet to know your speaker:  \nLeslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years\, President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017 and has recently had her research coordinator title changed to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer by the National Association based in Oklahoma.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. \nRetired from the medical field\, after 25 years working with people and another 5 years with animals\, retirement allows her to pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine. \nShe is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum\, former member of the board of directors for Chieftains Museum in Rome\, former board member for the Gilmer County Genealogy Society\, former board member for the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association\, and newsletter editor for her local church. \n  \nBorn in Chicago she got here as soon as she could.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas was retired from the US Postal Service as a Postal Inspector and Supervisor was born in Alpharetta. During this lecture Tiffany Player\, assistant professor of History at Georgia State University\, will present\, “Its Success Is Our Success:” The Negro Building and the Politics of Slavery at the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition.  Player will share why the 1895 Atlanta Exposition offered a unique opportunity for African Americans to control the legacy of slavery after the Civil War.  In addition\, she will talk about what was the Negro Building and why was it so popular among Atlanta fair goers\, and how the Negro Building helped launch a national Black women’s reform movement. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nMember tickets are free and non-member tickets are $6.50.  Tickets \nGet to know your speaker:  \nTiffany Player is completing her first year as an assistant professor of History at Georgia State University. Tiffany is a historian of identity formation and the attendant political and social transformations of communities within the African diaspora during slavery and after emancipation. She is currently working on her book project\, tentatively titled\, “What Are We Going to Do For Ourselves?: African American Women and the Politics of Slavery from the Antebellum Era to the Great Depression that analyzes Black women’s efforts to force a public reckoning with the material and cultural legacies of slavery in the United States as an essential component of their political power across multiple generations. Bailey serves the Parks and Historic Sites Division\, as the Interpretive Ranger of Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site.  He was born in Calhoun\, Georgia in 1972. As a youth\, he spent a lot of time outdoors with his family and scouting. After graduating high school\, he received an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts at Reinhardt College. \nHis interests in nature\, history\, and tinkering have led him to explore a variety of hobbies\, including blacksmithing and genealogy. After a couple years working in a dye-house he began to care take his grandmothers farm\, was self-employed\, and home schooled his oldest child. He spent several years volunteering at RTM and occasionally a few other state parks as a Friend of Georgia State Parks and volunteers with scouting as an adult leader.
