SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Amelia Golcheski
DESCRIPTION:“Material Worth Preserving: Care Labor and the Foxfire Project”\nJoin the Bartow History Museum for a presentation by Amelia Golcheski\, a doctoral candidate in history at Emory University. Golcheski will be discussing Appalachia\, care labor\, and the Foxfire project. More specifically\, she will discuss how the Foxfire project preserved southern Appalachian culture during a period of change and globalization (the 1960s-1980s)\, and womens important role in this preservation. \nThis lecture is free for BHM members. $7 for non-members. \nGet Tickets Here\nGet to Know the Speaker\n \nAmelia Golcheski is a doctoral candidate in history at Emory University. Her research examines the professionalization of women’s care labor in central Appalachia at the end of the 20th century. She traces the development of unpaid labor in the home to jobs defined by care in the education\, healthcare\, and childcare professions. Her work argues that women’s labor\, vital and unpaid in the industrial economy in the early 20th century\, became central to the region’s post-industrial landscape. Before coming to Emory\, Amelia received a Master’s in Public Humanities from Brown University and a Bachelor’s in History from Agnes Scott College.

SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Erin Zaballa
DESCRIPTION:Scales and Tales: The Importance of Reptiles in Native American Cultures of the Southeast\nWhen it comes to reptiles and amphibians\, the southeastern United States is the most biodiverse region in North America – Georgia alone is home to over 160 species! Evidence of the prominent role of reptiles in the traditions of southeastern indigenous people can be found in their artwork\, in their legends\, and in their traditional knowledge. During this presentation\, attendees will explore some of these aspects of southeastern Native American culture and meet some of the real-life animals that inspired them. \nThis lecture is free for BHM members. $7 for not yet members. \nGet Tickets Here\nGet to Know the Speaker\n \nErin Zaballa is a history and environmental educator who has always been fascinated by how  landscapes and ecosystems of the natural world have influenced human history. She graduated from Kennesaw State University with a BA in American History with minor in Native American Studies and a BS in Environmental Studies. I began my college career at the age of twenty-five with a ninth grade education and a GED. I obtained my masters degree in History\, which has allowed me to help tell the stories of marginalized communities in the South. In turn\, assisting communities in telling their stories has helped me navigate my own story and how we all truly deserve the pursuit of decolonizing our own narratives.

SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Andrew Feiler
DESCRIPTION:A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, & the 4\,978 Schools That Changed America\nJoin us for a special presentation by photographer Andrew Feiler\, who will discuss his new book\, A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, and the 4\,978 Schools That Changed America. This presentation will be in conjunction with a photo exhibit along the fence in downtown Cartersville.\n\nIn 1912 Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald launched an ambitious program to partner with Black communities to build public schools for African American children. From 1912 to 1937\, when few such schools existed\, the program built 4\,978 schools across fifteen southern and border states. Rosenwald schools – one of the earliest collaborations between Jews and African Americans – drove dramatic improvement in Black educational attainment and educated the generation who became leaders and foot soldiers of the civil rights movement.Of the original 4\,978 schools\, only about 500 survive. To tell this story visually\, Feiler drove more than twenty-five thousand miles\, photographed 105 schools\, and interviewed dozens offormer students\, teachers\, preservationists\, and community leaders.\n\nFeiler will discuss how this project came to be and how the Rosenwald schools represent a watershed moment in the history of philanthropy.\n\nTo learn more about the photo exhibit and Andrew Feiler’s book\,  please visit the Exhibitions Tab on the Bartow History Museum website.\n\nThis program is co-sponsored by the Noble Hill-Wheeler Memorial Center\,  the Cartersville-Bartow Convention & Visitors Bureau\, and Mack Eppinger & Sons Funeral Services.\n\n      \n  \n\nGet Tickets Here\nGet to Know the Speaker\n \nAndrew Feiler is a photographer and author and fifth generation Georgian. Having grown up Jewish in Savannah\, he has been shaped by the rich complexities of the American South. Feiler has long beenactive in civic life. He has helped create over a dozen community initiatives\, serves on multiple not-forprofit boards\, and is an active advisor to numerous elected officials and political candidates. His art is an extension of his civic values. \nFeiler’s newest book of photography\, A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, and the 4\,978 Schools that Changed America\, was recently published by the University of  Georgia Press. This work is the first comprehensive photodocumentary of the program created by Tuskegee Institute principal Booker T. Washington and Sears\, Roebuck & Company president Julius Rosenwald. From 1912 to 1937\, this collaboration built 4\,978 schools for African American children across 15 southern and border states and transformed America. \nFeiler’s photographs have been instrumental in the campaign to create a new US national historical park and inspired the composition of a symphony. His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal\, Smithsonian\, Architect\, Preservation\, Eye on Photography\, The Forward as well as on CBS This Morningand NPR. His prints have been displayed in galleries and museums including solo exhibitions at such venues as the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis\, National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta\, and International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro\, NC. His photographs are in public and private collections including that of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. \nFeiler earned his bachelor’s in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a master’s in modern history from Oxford University and a master’s in business administration from Stanford University. \nTo view more of Feilers work\, visit his website www.andrewfeiler.com

Burials at the cemetery reach back to around the year 1838 when the Ebenezer Church\, a Methodist Congreation\, was organzied on the hilltop just off Erwin Street near Cassville Road. Unfortunately\, many of the early graves no longer have markers\, but depressions in the ground and brick borders give clues to their locations. Some time around 1869 the Cartersville town council voted to adopt the the “old Methodist Cemetery” as a public burial ground.  Within four years of its adoption as a public space\, it was given the offical name of Oak Hill. \n  \n  \nEvent Sponsored By:

SUMMARY:Evening Lecture - Terry Powis
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about Bartow County’s Native American History at this Evening Lecture! \nJoin Terry Powis\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Kennesaw State University\, as he discusses his team’s findings at a Mississippian Era village excavation site here in Bartow County. \nThis lecture is free for Bartow History Museum Members. $7 for not-yet-members. \nGET TICKETS HERE\nMore About the Site:\nRecent investigations by Kennesaw State University Field Schools completely excavated a 13th-century residential structure at the Cummings site\, a small community two kilometers downriver from the Etowah Indian Mounds. Dating to the Middle Mississippian period (AD 1250-1325)\, this newly established community was part of the return of people to Etowah and the site’s ascent to regional prominence. The only other completely excavated Early Wilbanks phase residential building was located adjacent to Etowah’s Mound B and dug by A.R. Kelly in the 1950s. The Cummings site structure presents a view of residential life on Etowah’s periphery during its rise to power. \nGet To Know the Speaker:\nTerry G. Powis\, PhD/RPA \nTerry is a New World archaeologist in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Kennesaw State University\, Kennesaw\, Georgia. He joined the faculty at Kennesaw State University in August 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor of Anthropology.
