SUMMARY:Lecture - Losing History
DESCRIPTION:It is easy to lose history without a conscious decision to preserve it.  Join us on February 27 at 7 p.m. at the Bartow History Museum as author Merrill Davies pursues this subject.  She will share with both children and adults the importance of asking questions of senior family members.  In addition\, she will explore why somethings are never recorded.  Davies will leave us with a few suggestions on how to preserve history moving forward. \n Merrill Davies is a retired high school English teacher with an interest in history.  After 31 years of teaching\, Davies has published four novels and one book of devotional poetry. As part of Thursday night’s program\, she will talk about\, Becoming Jestina\, a historical fiction about a Rosie the Riveter from WWII.  In this book\, Merrill captured the life experiences of Jane Tucker who worked as a rod welder on Liberty Ships at the Southeastern Shipyards in Savannah from 1943-1945.  In addition to hearing from Davies you will also have the opportunity to meet Tucker herself.  Join us for this informative evening.  Through this event\, we hope to encourage you as well as your children to consider how you might help preserve your own family history. \nIn addition to writing\, Davies enjoys spending time with family and friends and is active in Rome Toastmasters\, Rome Area Writers\, and First Baptist Church. She is currently working on her fifth novel as well as writing poetry. She was voted Rome News Tribune’s best local writer for 2019. \nThe lecture is free for members and included in the price of admission to the museum for non-members. \n

SUMMARY:Free Walking Tour - Unearthing African American History
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we pay homage to those sacred spaces that are often overlooked and forgotten when discussing history. Cemeteries are a treasure trove of information in helping us tell the story of our foremothers and forefathers—particularly for those populations whose history has been lost\, destroyed\, or not recorded throughout history. Join us on this 10 stop walking tour through Oak Hill Cemetery. We will tell the story of how the lives of those interred in the historically segregated African American sections (Sections 10 and 11) of Oak Hill are woven into the historical narrative of Cartersville and Bartow County. Afterwards\, reflect on your thoughts and feel free to share your personal family histories.  While this event is free\, a ticket is required.  Tours are scheduled for 4 and 5 p.m.\, each lasting approximately one hour.   \nIf you would like to be added to a wait list\, please click here.  We will notify you if additional space opens.  Thank you. \nTickets for 4 p.m. tour. – SOLD OUT\n \nTickets for 5 p.m. tour. – SOLD OUT \nPresented by the Etowah Bush School and Bartow History Museum \nSponsored by: \nParnick Jennings Funeral Home & Cremation Services and Mack Eppinger & Sons Funeral Service\, Inc. \n
