DESCRIPTION:Educating the Upcountry: Higher Education in Antebellum Cass (Bartow) County-Part 1  \nThe Cassville Female College \nJoin us on March 18 at noon at the Bartow History Museum\, as we welcome Matthew Gramling to our Lunch and Learn series.  Gramling is a research volunteer at the Bartow History Museum and Etowah Valley Historical Society. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Oglethorpe University and Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Gramling will discuss the history of higher education in antebellum Bartow County\, focusing specifically on the role and influence of the Cassville Female College in the development of North Georgia.  As a native and resident of Cassville\, Matthew has had a deep and abiding interest in this once thriving antebellum community since childhood.  Participants will hear about the history of the antebellum women’s education movement in the American South\, the role of Cassville Female College in shaping southern womanhood in Upcountry Georgia\, and the drive for southern educational independence.  The program is free for members and included in the price of admission to the museum for non-members.  Table space is available for those wishing to bring a lunch.  Tickets are available at the door or on-line at www.BartowHistoryMuseum.org.  Tickets

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Women’s History Month and the upcoming 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote\, the Bartow History Museum’s new temporary exhibit\, Women of Bartow\, features the stories of over 25 women who have made an impact on Bartow County and beyond dating back to the early 1800s through the present. Through artifacts and images\, this exhibit highlights their contributions to a variety of fields including business\, education\, art\, writing\, social movements\, and more. \nThe exhibit will open on Thursday\, March 26th\, with an opening reception beginning at 6:15 p.m.\, followed by our evening lecture at 7 p.m. featuring guest speaker Robert Jones discussing his book\, 30 Most Influential Women in Georgia History. \nAlso\, in conjunction with the opening of our new temporary exhibit\, the Bartow History Museum will honor notable contemporary women for carrying on the legacy of influential women in Bartow. DESCRIPTION:Santa is coming to the Bartow History Museum in Cartersville on November 14\, 2020.\n\nBring your letter to Santa\, and have your photo taken in a socially distant\, but creative way that will still be fun for the whole family.\n\nFamilies will be able to peek in on Santa in his workshop and chat with him about their wish list. Also\, hear from elves about Christmas traditions of the past.\n\nPhotography is in partnership with Louis Tonsmeire Studio. Children 3 and under must have an adult with them in the photograph. SUMMARY:Pox and Pig Iron - Zoom Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1849\, smallpox had broken out at the Etowah Iron Works and along with a concurrent outbreak in Atlanta caused a panic which swept across Upper Georgia. Trade and travel throughout the Georgia Piedmont and Upcountry came to a screeching halt. Town commissioners and count magistrates lead the charge to protect the health of their citizens through the implementation of various quarantine and smallpox prevention measures. The presentation by researcher Matthew Grambling\, will examine the ways in which antebellum Georgia confronted\, coped\, and overcame the threat of infectious disease in their communities as well as the role of local governments in advancing the cause of public health among their citizenry in combating the smallpox panic. It will also provide a glimpse into the practice of southern medicine in antebellum Bartow County and Upper Georgia.  Please note this is a virtual lecture offered on  Zoom. For more information on the Georgia Trail of Tears Association\, visit www.gatrailoftears.com. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nMember tickets are free and non-member tickets are $6.50.  Tickets \nGet to know your speaker:  \nLeslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years\, President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017 and has recently had her research coordinator title changed to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer by the National Association based in Oklahoma.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. \nRetired from the medical field\, after 25 years working with people and another 5 years with animals\, retirement allows her to pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine. \nShe is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum\, former member of the board of directors for Chieftains Museum in Rome\, former board member for the Gilmer County Genealogy Society\, former board member for the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association\, and newsletter editor for her local church. \n  \nBorn in Chicago she got here as soon as she could.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas was retired from the US Postal Service as a Postal Inspector and Supervisor was born in Alpharetta. During this lecture Tiffany Player\, assistant professor of History at Georgia State University\, will present\, “Its Success Is Our Success:” The Negro Building and the Politics of Slavery at the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition.  Player will share why the 1895 Atlanta Exposition offered a unique opportunity for African Americans to control the legacy of slavery after the Civil War.  In addition\, she will talk about what was the Negro Building and why was it so popular among Atlanta fair goers\, and how the Negro Building helped launch a national Black women’s reform movement. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nMember tickets are free and non-member tickets are $6.50.  Tickets \nGet to know your speaker:  \nTiffany Player is completing her first year as an assistant professor of History at Georgia State University. She is currently working on her book project\, tentatively titled\, “What Are We Going to Do For Ourselves?: African American Women and the Politics of Slavery from the Antebellum Era to the Great Depression that analyzes Black women’s efforts to force a public reckoning with the material and cultural legacies of slavery in the United States as an essential component of their political power across multiple generations.
