SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Gossip within the Spring Place Moravian Mission to the Cherokee Country
DESCRIPTION:GOSSIP\, RELATIONSHIPS AND EVERYDAY LIFE REVEALED AT SPRING PLACE\nWhat can historical records reveal about the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked at the Spring Place Moravian Mission? Find out during Lunch & Learn: Gossip within the Spring Place Moravian Mission to the Cherokee Country on October 21 from noon to 1 p.m. \nThe program will explore the lesser-known stories preserved in the Records of the Moravians Among the Cherokee\, a collection of firsthand accounts documenting life at the Spring Place Moravian Mission during the early 19th century. \nResearchers often turn to these records for insight into the Indian Removal Act and the Cherokee Trail of Tears\, but the diaries offer much more. Their pages also capture the personalities\, relationships and everyday interactions of the people who made up the Spring Place community. \nThe presentation will examine relationships among Moravian missionaries\, their Cherokee congregation\, enslaved Africans and Black community members\, as well as James Vann\, the mission’s prominent sponsor. Together\, these often-overlooked accounts provide a more personal glimpse into life at Spring Place and the people whose stories shaped its history. \nAbout the Speaker\nIrina Garner serves as Assistant Manager of the Chief Vann House State Historic Site in Chatsworth\, Georgia\, where she coordinates events\, develops educational programs and tours\, writes historical interpretation\, and helps create programming for field trips and park visitors. \nGarner also works to strengthen the site’s relationships with the Eastern and Western Bands of the Cherokee Nation. Her work supports the preservation and interpretation of the site through house and grounds restoration projects\, trail expansions\, native gardens and endangered plant restoration initiatives. \nA central part of Garner’s work involves bringing greater attention to lesser-known aspects of the site’s history\, including the history of enslavement and the causes and long-term impacts of the 19th-century Indian Removal Act. \nAdmission:\n\nFree for Bartow History Museum members\n$9 for non-members\n\nGet Your Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia
DESCRIPTION:LOST BENEATH THE WATER: THE GHOST TOWNS OF NORTH GEORGIA\nWhat lies beneath North Georgia’s lakes? In many cases\, entire communities. \nJoin us for an Evening Lecture\, Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia\, featuring author and Georgia historian Lisa M. Russell on October 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. \nDrawing from her book of the same name\, Russell will uncover the stories of communities that disappeared beneath North Georgia’s man-made lakes. The region is home to more than 40 lakes\, none of which formed naturally. As rivers were dammed to provide power and water\, the resulting reservoirs permanently transformed the landscape\, displacing families and submerging towns\, crossroads\, racetracks and other places that once played a role in everyday life. \nRussell will share the stories of the people who faced these dramatic changes\, including more than 700 families displaced by the creation of Lake Lanier\, schoolboys recruited to help relocate a cemetery during the construction of Lake Chatuge\, and 78-year-old Eliza Brock\, who confronted contractors clearing her property for Lake Hartwell with a shotgun. \nDuring periods of extreme drought\, the waters sometimes recede enough to reveal remnants of these lost communities\, offering a rare glimpse of the places that disappeared beneath North Georgia’s lakes. \nAbout the Speaker\nLisa M. Russell\, MAPW\, earned a Master of Arts in Professional Writing from Kennesaw State University in 2012. She teaches Human Communication in the School of Communication and Media and First-Year English in the English Department. She also teaches full-time at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. \nRussell is the author of three creative nonfiction books published by Arcadia/History Press: Lost Towns of North Georgia\, Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia\, and Lost Company Towns of North Georgia. \nAdmission:\n\nFree for Bartow History Museum members\n$9 for non-members\n\nGet Your Tickets Here
