The lecture will focus on how several areas of Georgia specifically contributed to WWII. DESCRIPTION:Celebration in honor of Justice Robert Benham\, recent retiree of the Supreme Court of Georgia.\nJoin us on Thursday\, July 29\, 2021 at 6 p.m. at the Booth Western Art Museum’s Bergman Theatre for an event honoring Justice Robert Benham’s years of service to the state of Georgia. \nPresentations and Discussion\nGuests should arrive and go directly to the Booth Western Art Museum. The event will start with brief presentations from the City of Cartersville and Bartow County\, and State Representative Matthew Gambill. Following the presentations\, local attorney\, David Archer\, and long-time friend\, Donald Jones will hold a discussion with Justice Benham. \nReception\nFinally\, the evening will end with a reception at the Bartow History Museum at 7:30 p.m. During the reception\, attendees are invited to visit the temporary exhibit called\, “From Summer Hill to the Halls of Justice: Robert Benham’s Journey to the Supreme Court of Georgia. The exhibit features items from the Bartow History Museum’s collection and items on loan from the Benham’s themselves. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Anyone planning to attend should RSVP to info@bartowhistorymuseum.org or call the Bartow History Museum at (770) 387-2774. \n  \nAbout Justice Robert Benham\nPhoto of Justice Robert Benham \nRobert Benham was born September 25\, 1946 to Jesse Knox Benham and Clarence Benham in Cartersville\, GA. He graduated Summer Hill High School in 1963. Benham continued his education earning a B.S. in Political Science from Tuskegee University in 1967; graduated from the University of Georgia\, Lumpkin School of Law with a J. D. Degree in 1970; and a Master’s in Law from the University of Virginia in 1989. \nAfter completing law school\, Justice Benham served in the U.S. Army Reserve\,. He attained the rank of Captain. Benham later returned to Cartersville where he took up private practice law\, served as Special Assistant Attorney General\, and served two terms as President of the Bartow County Bar Association. \nOn April 3\, 1984\, Benham was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Joe Frank Harris. He won the statewide election and served on the Court of Appeals for five years. In December 1989\, Benham was appointed by Governor Joe Frank Harris to the Supreme Court of Georgia. Again\, Benham won statewide election to a full term on the Supreme Court. In December of 2019\, Justice Benham announced that he would resign from the Supreme Court of Georgia in March of 2020\, ending his Benham spent 34 years of service on the bench. \n

Thomas \nLeslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years. She was also the President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017 and has recently had her research coordinator title changed to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer by the National Association based in Oklahoma.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. \nAfter 30 years of working in the medical field\, Leslie was able to retire and pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine. \nFurthermore\, she is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum\, Leslie has been on the boards of various historical organizations including the Chieftains Museum in Rome\, the Gilmer County Genealogy Society\, and the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association. She also serves as the newsletter editor for her local church. \nLeslie was born in Chicago.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was born in Alpharetta. Bailey serves the Parks and Historic Sites Division\, as the Interpretive Ranger of Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site.  He was born in Calhoun\, Georgia in 1972. As a youth\, he spent a lot of time outdoors with his family and scouting. After graduating high school\, he received an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts at Reinhardt College. \nHis interests in nature\, history\, and tinkering have led him to explore a variety of hobbies\, including blacksmithing and genealogy. After a couple years working in a dye-house he began to care take his grandmothers farm\, was self-employed\, and home schooled his oldest child. He spent several years volunteering at RTM and occasionally a few other state parks as a Friend of Georgia State Parks and volunteers with scouting as an adult leader. Thomas will discuss the importance of preservation of Cherokee history.  In addition\, she will talk about what the Trail of Tears Association does to preserve the history\, what has been done to sign sites\, and what sites are in our area. \nThomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the President.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association\, which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. For more information on the Georgia Trail of Tears Association\, visit www.gatrailoftears.com. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nMember tickets are free and non-member tickets are $6.50.  Tickets \nGet to know your speaker:  \nLeslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years\, President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017 and has recently had her research coordinator title changed to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer by the National Association based in Oklahoma.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. \nRetired from the medical field\, after 25 years working with people and another 5 years with animals\, retirement allows her to pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine. \nShe is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum\, former member of the board of directors for Chieftains Museum in Rome\, former board member for the Gilmer County Genealogy Society\, former board member for the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association\, and newsletter editor for her local church. \n  \nBorn in Chicago she got here as soon as she could.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas was retired from the US Postal Service as a Postal Inspector and Supervisor was born in Alpharetta. Town commissioners and court magistrates led the charge to protect the health of their citizens through the implementation of various quarantine and smallpox prevention measures.\n\nThe presentation\, by researcher Matthew Gramling\, will examine the ways in which antebellum Georgia confronted\, coped\, and overcame the threat of infectious disease in their communities\, as well as the role of local governments in advancing the cause of public health among their citizenry in combating the smallpox panic. DESCRIPTION:Santa is coming to the Bartow History Museum in Cartersville on November 14\, 2020.\n\nBring your letter to Santa\, and have your photo taken in a socially distant\, but creative way that will still be fun for the whole family.\n\nFamilies will be able to peek in on Santa in his workshop and chat with him about their wish list. Also\, hear from elves about Christmas traditions of the past.\n\nPhotography is in partnership with Louis Tonsmeire Studio. Children 3 and under must have an adult with them in the photograph. Visits begin at 9:00 a.m. Reservations must be purchased in advance. Masks are not required for your photo\, but are encouraged for the rest of your visit.  Reservations
