DESCRIPTION:Uncovering A History of Poverty & Disability in Northwest Georgia From 1928 – Today\nJoin us for a joint presentation by Dr. Michelle Haney\, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Autism/Applied Behavioral Analysis Program at Berry College\, and Dr. Keith Hébert\, Professor of Southern History at Auburn University.\n\n\n\nThe presentation will focus on the origins of modern practices of institutional care for marginalized people\, and how cultural and scientific trends shaped the history of such practices using a case study of Bartow County\, Georgia.\n\nThis lecture is free for members. $7 for non-members.\nGET TICKETS HERE\nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Michelle Haney \nDr. Michelle Haney is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Autism/Applied Behavior Analysis Program at Berry College.  Her current research interests include transitioning students with developmental disabilities from high school to the community\, inclusive post-secondary education opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities\, and the intersection of history\, culture\, and current practices that support independence and self- determination for people with intellectual disabilities.   Dr. Haney especially enjoys teaching courses that actively engage students in community projects\, while also supporting inclusive opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. \nDr. Haney received her BA degree in psychology from Oglethorpe University\, her Master’s and Specialist Degrees in school psychology from the University of Georgia\, and her Ph.D. in school psychology from Georgia State University. For eight years\, she worked as a school psychologist in Bartow and Cobb County Schools in Georgia\, with a clinical specialty in developmental disabilities. More recently\, Dr. Haney completed supervised clinical experiences in Applied Behavior Analysis\, working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in clinic settings. \n \nDr. Keith Hébert \nKeith S. Hébert joined the Auburn University faculty in 2014 where he directs the department’s public history certificate program and offers courses in public history and southern history. Previously\, Hébert worked for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources\, Historic Preservation Division as the state historian. His research focuses on the Confederate home front during the American Civil War and the role that white supremacy played in the development of Civil War memory. Hébert is an accomplished scholar and writer with many articles and books to his credit.

In keeping with the theme of our feature exhibition\, “Thread by Thread: Northwest Georgia’s Tufted Textile Heritage\,” Dr. Ann McCleary\, Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History\, will be presenting on the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail project. \nThis lecture is free for members. $7 for non-members. \nGet Tickets Here \nGet to Know the Speaker\n \nDr. McCleary’s current research focuses on National Park Service history\, textile history in Georgia\, and cultural heritage tourism. She co-curated a Smithsonian Museum on Main Street Exhibition on rural America\, Crossroads: Change in Rural America\, which opened in 2018\, and she serves as the state scholar for the 2019-20 exhibition tour in Georgia. She is also currently researching and writing about heritage tourism and craft in Malawi. \nDr. McCleary coordinates the Public History program and the Museum Studies Certificate program. She co-teaches the courses in Museum Studies with staff at the Atlanta History Center\, having worked for many years in the museum community in Virginia and as a museum consultant. \nIn her role as Director of the Center for Public History\, Dr. McCleary directs a variety of research projects focusing on the history and culture of the region and the state\, including the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail and the Regional Music Project. She co-chairs a university committee documenting and interpreting a cemetery for enslaved peoples on the former Thomas Bonner plantation\, formerly located on the UWG campus. \nBefore coming to establish the public history program at the University of West Georgia in 1997\, Dr. McCleary worked as an architectural historian with the Virginia state historic preservation office; as assistant director\, chief curator\, and curator of research and programs at the Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton\, Virginia; and as a public history consultant.

DESCRIPTION:Family Friendly Parade Sip & Stroll\nJoin the Bartow History Museum on December 2\, 2021 for our Christmas Parade Sip & Stroll. \nThose who sign-up for the Sip & Stroll will be guaranteed downtown parking\, a prime parade viewing location at the corner of Church and Erwin St.\, and snacks while watching the parade\, put on by the Cartersville Exchange Club. \nAfter the parade passes\, while everyone else is stuck in traffic\, the actual Sip & Stroll will begin. One of our BHM educators will take attendees on a guided tour back to the museum\, near where they are parked. This year’s tour will focus on the history of holiday music. Though a native of New York\, Lindsay grew up in\nRoswell\, Georgia. She graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in History\, Technology\, and Society. She then earned her Master of Heritage Preservation with a concentration in Public History from Georgia State University in 2015. Lindsay has been a Certified Archivist since 2019 and has research interests in 20th Century Southern history\, American religious history\, and architectural and design history.

DESCRIPTION:Santa Claus is Coming to the Bartow History Museum\nSanta is coming to the Bartow History Museum on November 13 for a special photography session with local photographer\, Louis Tonsmeire. Bring your letter to Santa\, and have your photo taken in a socially distant\, but creative way that will still be fun for the whole family. Guests will also have a chance to look in Santa’s workshop\, pick up a goody bag full of fun holiday crafts\, and get a chance to see our museum exhibits decorated for the holidays! Our BHM elves will also be around to tell you about Christmas traditions of the past. \nPhotography is in partnership with Louis Tonsmeire Studio. Children 3 and under must have an adult with them in the photograph. In 2009\, she retired as Principal of Calhoun Primary School in the Calhoun City School System. In between\, she had the opportunity to serve as a second grade teacher at Mission Road Elementary\, a school counselor at Taylorsville Elementary\, and a program specialist at the State Department of Education in Atlanta. \nAfter retiring from education\, Smith joined the Sans Souci Women’s Club in Adairsville\, and was part of the collaboration between the City of Adairsville\, the Sans Souci Women’s Club\, and Kennesaw State University Public History Department. The collaboration resulted in the restructured and reorganized Adairsville History Museum at the historic Depot in downtown Adairsville. \nSmith and her husband Gary and lived in Adairsville for 19 years\, but recently moved back to Cartersville to be closer to family. Smith and her husband are enjoying retirement and watching 8 grandchildren\, ages 2-19\, grow up way too fast! \nLinda Bass \nBass moved to Adairsville in 1968 to begin her 35-year long teaching career. She taught French & English for 34 years at Adairsville High & French for one year at Cass High.  Bass joined the Sans Souci Women’s Club in 1998 and has held various offices in the club\, including president\, vice-president\, and secretary. Her husband\, Kenneth\, is also a retired teacher. They have one daughter\, Chelsea Bass Janik\, who is a teacher in Floyd County. \n

The presentation will focus on the heroic efforts of MacMurdo’s grandfather Stefan Ryniewicz during WWII. Ryniewicz\, a Polish diplomat\, was part of a covert group that forged passports to give to Jewish families. These passports ultimately saved thousands of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust\, including Heidi Fishman’s grandfather. \nThis is an online\, Zoom lecture. \nFree for members. $7.00 for non-members. \nGet tickets here \nAbout the Speakers:\nHeidi Fishman (left) and Alexandra MacMurdo Reiter (right) pose for a photo following a joint presentation. \nAlexandra Reiter\, MA\, EMBA\n Alexandra Reiter is an Assistant Professor of Communication with 13 years of experience teaching Communication courses at Georgia Highlands College.  Alex received her Bachelor of Science in Communication from Florida State University\, and her Masters in Organizational Communication and Executive MBA from Suffolk University in Boston\, Massachusetts. \nAlex teaches courses including Human Communication\, Intercultural Communication and Public Speaking.  Alex’s mission is to help people become more confident communicators and presenters.  Her areas of expertise and focus include speech delivery and presentation\, audience analysis and nonverbal communication. \nIn June 2019\, Alex accepted the Virtus Et Fraternitas medal presented to her by Polish President Andrzej Duda.  Only 14 medals of this type have been given in Polish history.  This medal was given posthumously for her grandfather’s bravery in saving Jews in occupied German territory during World War II through the creation of fake foreign passports which saved thousands of lives. \nAlex lives in Dallas\, GA with her husband Brady and their 4 daughters\, 2 cats and 1 dog.  In her free time\, she enjoys yoga\, boating\, watching Florida State football and Atlanta United soccer and spending time with her family. \nHeidi Fishman\, MA\, EdD\, Author\nHeidi Fishman is an author and psychologist. She has an M.A. and an Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology and worked at Dartmouth College and in private practice for 20 years focusing on helping people overcome trauma and eating disorders. \nWhile Heidi always knew her mother and grandparents were Holocaust survivors\, she didn’t start researching their story until she retired. Five years of investigation led to Tutti’s Promise (2017\, MB Publishing\, Bethesda) which\, while fictionalized for the purpose of allowing conversations among characters\, follows the Lichtensterns’ true story from May 10\, 1940\, in Amsterdam through two Nazi camps\, liberation\, and resettlement; the book contains a significant number of original documents. \nFishman won the Joseph Zola Memorial Holocaust Educator Award from the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford. Tutti’s Promise was designated by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Children’s Book Council as a Notable Trade Book for Young People and has won numerous other awards. \nHeidi speaks to schools and community groups in order to teach about the perils of prejudice and bigotry. She has made multiple visits to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, DC to sign copies of Tutti’s Promise. Pre-Covid\, she travelled throughout the US. In this time of Covid\, she presents remotely. Heidi is also on the board of the Vermont Holocaust Memorial and is Vice-Chair of the International Committee of the Ładoś Group. \nShe lives in Vermont with her husband and an aging border terrier. When she isn’t staying home due to Covid safety measures she likes to travel and discover new places and meet new people. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Celebration in honor of Justice Robert Benham\, recent retiree of the Supreme Court of Georgia.\nJoin us on Thursday\, July 29\, 2021 at 6 p.m. at the Booth Western Art Museum’s Bergman Theatre for an event honoring Justice Robert Benham’s years of service to the state of Georgia. \nPresentations and Discussion\nGuests should arrive and go directly to the Booth Western Art Museum. The event will start with brief presentations from the City of Cartersville and Bartow County\, and State Representative Matthew Gambill. Following the presentations\, local attorney\, David Archer\, and long-time friend\, Donald Jones will hold a discussion with Justice Benham. \nReception\nFinally\, the evening will end with a reception at the Bartow History Museum at 7:30 p.m. During the reception\, attendees are invited to visit the temporary exhibit called\, “From Summer Hill to the Halls of Justice: Robert Benham’s Journey to the Supreme Court of Georgia. The exhibit features items from the Bartow History Museum’s collection and items on loan from the Benham’s themselves. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Anyone planning to attend should RSVP to info@bartowhistorymuseum.org or call the Bartow History Museum at (770) 387-2774. \n  \nAbout Justice Robert Benham\nPhoto of Justice Robert Benham \nRobert Benham was born September 25\, 1946 to Jesse Knox Benham and Clarence Benham in Cartersville\, GA. He graduated Summer Hill High School in 1963. Benham continued his education earning a B.S. in Political Science from Tuskegee University in 1967; graduated from the University of Georgia\, Lumpkin School of Law with a J. D. Degree in 1970; and a Master’s in Law from the University of Virginia in 1989. \nAfter completing law school\, Justice Benham served in the U.S. Army Reserve\,. He attained the rank of Captain. Benham later returned to Cartersville where he took up private practice law\, served as Special Assistant Attorney General\, and served two terms as President of the Bartow County Bar Association. \nOn April 3\, 1984\, Benham was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Joe Frank Harris. He won the statewide election and served on the Court of Appeals for five years. In December 1989\, Benham was appointed by Governor Joe Frank Harris to the Supreme Court of Georgia. Again\, Benham won statewide election to a full term on the Supreme Court. In December of 2019\, Justice Benham announced that he would resign from the Supreme Court of Georgia in March of 2020\, ending his Benham spent 34 years of service on the bench. \n

Thomas \nLeslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association\, serving as the newsletter editor\, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years. She was also the President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017 and has recently had her research coordinator title changed to the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer by the National Association based in Oklahoma.  She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states\, and on the board of the local Georgia chapter. \nAfter 30 years of working in the medical field\, Leslie was able to retire and pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine. \nFurthermore\, she is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum\, Leslie has been on the boards of various historical organizations including the Chieftains Museum in Rome\, the Gilmer County Genealogy Society\, and the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association. She also serves as the newsletter editor for her local church. \nLeslie was born in Chicago.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was born in Alpharetta. DESCRIPTION:Lecture With Keith Bailey\, Interpretive Range at the Etowah Indian Mounds\nJoin us on Zoom as part of the Bartow History Museum’s on-line lecture programming on May 19\, 2021 at noon as Keith Bailey\, Interpretive Ranger of Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site\, present\, “It’s Georgia Archaeology Month – One Thing Leads to Another”.   \nBailey will discuss how archaeology connects us to the past.  In addition\, he will talk about life before the Etowah Mounds and the hunt for resources that brought Native Americans to this area.  Finally\, he will discuss the link between those that lived at the Etowah Mounds and others across time.  We hope you will take time to be a part of this interesting and informative lecture and opportunity to learn about those that also wants called this area home. \nIf you would like to learn more about the Etowah Indian Mounds prior to our lecture\, please visit their website. \nThis is a virtual lecture on Zoom.  Tickets are required.\nThe lecture is free for members and $6.50 for non-members.  Tickets \nGet to know the speaker\n \nKeith D. Bailey serves the Parks and Historic Sites Division\, as the Interpretive Ranger of Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site.  He was born in Calhoun\, Georgia in 1972. As a youth\, he spent a lot of time outdoors with his family and scouting. After graduating high school\, he received an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts at Reinhardt College. \nHis interests in nature\, history\, and tinkering have led him to explore a variety of hobbies\, including blacksmithing and genealogy. After a couple years working in a dye-house he began to care take his grandmothers farm\, was self-employed\, and home schooled his oldest child. He spent several years volunteering at RTM and occasionally a few other state parks as a Friend of Georgia State Parks and volunteers with scouting as an adult leader.
