She graduated from Cartersville High School in 2016\, before moving to Statesboro\, GA and attending Georgia Southern Univeristy where she obtained her B.S. in Public Relations and a minor in History. She joined the Bartow History Museum staff a member of the education team in October of 2020\, and made BHM history when she married her husband on her lunch break on her very first day of work for the museum. Lauren now works as the Marketing Manager for the museum\, and she currently resides in Cartersville with her husband\, Cameron\, and various house plants she stuggles to keep alive.

Take a guided tour through the museum\, hear local myths\, legends\, and ghost stories\, and learn how those myths and legends connect back to bigger pieces of North American Folklore. And\, of course\, enjoy a festive Halloween cocktail to top off the tour!\n– The Myths & Monsters tour is a $10 addition to the standard pub crawl ticket\, and is only available for Saturday\, October 29th.\n–  There are three tour times: 6:00\, 7:00\, 8:00 p.m. Guests can pick their time slot when purchasing tickets.\n– All ticket information and purchases\, punch card pick-up\, and cup pick- up will be handled through the DDA.\n\n\nSpecial BHM Member Offer: \nAs a special benefit just for our BHM members\, we are offering $10 admission to Myths & Monsters Tour on Saturday\, October 29th! DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Pages of History\nBartow History Museum volunteer\, Rebecca Melsheimer\, will be discussing her work on transcribing the PMB Young Civil War letters in our collection. This lunch and learn will give a bit of background on the letters and the family that wrote them\, and describe how archivists work to preserve and transcribe these paper artifacts. All of this will be interspersed with some of the stories the family shared with each other that will allow us to feel like part of the family. \nThis lecture is free for BHM members. $7 for not yet members. \nGet Tickets Here\nGet to Know the Speaker\nRebecca Melsheimer has worked at Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville\, Georgia\, since 2012 in various roles\, and as the Curatorial Assistant since July of this year. After receiving a MS in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 2003\, she has shared her love of science and history with audiences of all ages and backgrounds\, having worked on exhibits including such diverse topics as motorcycles\, materials science\, science fiction\, and cave minerals. She has volunteered in the Bartow History Museum Archives and Mulinix Research Center since 2011\, working on the Young family letters most of that time.

DESCRIPTION:Learn more about Bartow County’s Native American History at this Evening Lecture! \nJoin Terry Powis\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Kennesaw State University\, as he discusses his team’s findings at a Mississippian Era village excavation site here in Bartow County. \nThis lecture is free for Bartow History Museum Members. $7 for not-yet-members. \nGET TICKETS HERE\nMore About the Site:\nRecent investigations by Kennesaw State University Field Schools completely excavated a 13th-century residential structure at the Cummings site\, a small community two kilometers downriver from the Etowah Indian Mounds. Dating to the Middle Mississippian period (AD 1250-1325)\, this newly established community was part of the return of people to Etowah and the site’s ascent to regional prominence. The only other completely excavated Early Wilbanks phase residential building was located adjacent to Etowah’s Mound B and dug by A.R. Kelly in the 1950s. The Cummings site structure presents a view of residential life on Etowah’s periphery during its rise to power. \nGet To Know the Speaker:\nTerry G. Powis\, PhD/RPA \nTerry is a New World archaeologist in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Kennesaw State University\, Kennesaw\, Georgia. He joined the faculty at Kennesaw State University in August 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor of Anthropology. Terry received his Master’s degree in anthropology at Trent University and his Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is an archaeologist researching the Maya Lowlands of Belize\, Central America\, and the Southeastern United States. He specializes in pottery\, diet and subsistence\, and the development of complex societies.

Take a guided tour of the quilt exhibition Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West\, learn about and create tessellations\, design a slap bracelet with symbols and patterns\, make your very own quilt-square\, contribute to our community quilt-making project\,  at the Booth Western Art Museum! \nThen head to the  Bartow History Museum to weave a textile on your very own cardboard loom. He is the father to his 16-year-old son\, De’mari Benham. After graduating from Cass High School in 2003\, he obtained a B.A. in Business Management\, in 2007\, from Fort Valley State University. He is a member of Saint Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church\, Cartersville\, Georgia\, and serves as a steward and usher.  \nBenham is a member of New Frontier of Bartow County\, Inc.\, Board Chair for the American Red Cross\, Northwest Georgia Chapter\, and also sits on the following boards: Atlanta’s Best and Brightest\, United Way of Bartow County\, and Cartersville-Bartow Chamber of Commerce. He’s worked at Goodwill of North Georgia for the past 12 years. Currently\, he is the Technical Assistance Manager\, overseeing contract for the statewide SNAP E&T program.

His most recent publications were “Richard O’Gorman on Race\, Class\, and Culture in Nineteenth-Century Irish America” with New Hibernia Review (2022)\, and “Andrew Jackson and the Protestant Irish of Philadelphia: Early Nineteenth Century Sectarianism” with Pennsylvania History (2020). \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the Bartow History Museum for a Spring evening full of libations and learning!\nParticipants will get the chance to sip on spring-inspired cocktails while learning about the ingredients of their drinks from our local partners. Our friends at Southern Cove will walk participants through a special presentation about distilling\, as well as the tales and the history of the spirits in their drinks inside the museum\, while outside in our alley a Master Gardner volunteer will be leading participants in a hands-on workshop to make their own windowsill planters of the herbs used for the cocktail garnishes. \nTickets for this event are $30 per person and include two cocktails\, plus all the supplies needed to make a windowsill planter. DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT.\nLearn about the art of embroidery and sewing with BHM!\nJoin us and local needlework expert\, Leslie Bronson\, for a workshop on the history and art of embroidery. Participants will learn to embroider and hand-sew a small bag using a variety of materials including hand-spun\, hand-dyed silk\, and cotton threads in this one-day workshop. Beginner sewers are welcome and encouraged. \nThis workshop is $30 per person and includes all the materials needed for the workshop. \n\n  \n \nMeet Your Expert\nNeedlework is my lifelong passion. I love to spin\, weave\, knit\, embroider\, sew\, crochet\, and dye. I enjoy the old traditional ways that my Grandmother taught me as well the contemporary techniques that I learned in art school (BFA from UGA) and in many excellent workshops. I’ve been teaching needlework for over 30 years. I am a long-time member of the Etowah Valley Handspinners Guild in Cartersville and the Peachtree Handspinners Guild in Atlanta.

From field trips to lectures\, and adult events\,  come peek behind the curtain and see how your support is put to work! \nThis lecture is free for BHM Members.$7 for not-yet-members. \nGet Tickets Here\n \nGet to Know the Education Team\nBethanie Ackman \nA lifelong lover of history\, it was fate that found Bethanie at one of BHM’s Sip ‘n Stroll events this past spring. She quickly found her new home at the museum and jumped in with both feet to begin educating students coming through the museum’s robust education program. Bethanie holds a BS in history from Mercer University and has years of practical experience with children\, which she applies daily in her new position as an educator. She has called Cartersville home for over two years\, having relocated from Marietta in 2021. When not working Bethanie can usually be found nose deep in a book\, working in her garden\, or chasing after her husband John\, and beloved Irish setter\, Maggie. \nTori Cline \nTori Cline joined the Bartow History Museum staff in 2022 as an educator. She lives in Cartersville with her husband Jack and their one-year-old\, Fowler Elizabeth. After graduating from Adairsville High School\, Tori moved to Athens\, GA where she pursued a Bachelor’s of Arts in Religion\, also gaining a minor in history and graduating in 2017. Tori’s passion lies not just in learning about history but also in sharing that information with anyone who will listen. Moving back to Bartow County\, getting married\, and starting a family prompted Tori to get involved with the community’s local history. \nJordan Duncan \nJordan Duncan is the Bartow History Museum Program Manager. Originally from south Louisiana\, he has been a Georgia resident since 1998.  Jordan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in World History and Cultures\, a certificate in Public History\, and a minor in Classical Studies from Kennesaw State University. He lives in Canton\, Ga with his wife Chelsea and their three cats. Over the last seven years\, he has held various positions within the museum field. In addition to his passion for history and history education\, Jordan is an avid lover of all things pop-culture related such as music\, film\, animation\, comic books\, and video games. He is always up for a good ghost story and in his spare time\, he is a vlogger and podcaster.

Educators will have a chance to network with colleagues and view the Museum galleries at their leisure. Food\, adult beverages\, exhibition tours\, scavenger hunts\, selfie stations\, art making\, and giveaways will all be part of the festivities. FREE admission for educators (or anyone working in the school system with ID). Want to bring a guest? One guest per educator. Guests must be 21 years or older and pay museum admission ($13.00).
