SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Making of America’s Parks
DESCRIPTION:Our Mark on This Land: The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps\nThe Bartow History Museum is pleased to welcome authors Ren and Helen Davis for a special program exploring the history and lasting impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)\, one of the most influential New Deal programs in American history. \nTheir book\, Our Mark on This Land: A Guide to the Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in America’s Parks\, published in 2011\, represents more than a decade of in-depth research. The project included extensive work in state and national archives\, park collections\, and on-site visits to state and national parks across the country. The book grew out of a 1998 article for Georgia Journal Magazine that examined the CCC’s work in Georgia. \nDuring the program\, attendees will learn how the CCC shaped America’s parks and public lands and why its legacy still matters today. While Our Mark on This Land is no longer in print\, limited copies will be available for purchase. \nAbout the Speakers\nRen and Helen Davis are the authors of numerous acclaimed titles\, including Atlanta Walks\, Georgia Walks\, Best Hikes Atlanta\, and Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery: An Illustrated History and Guide\, which won both the Lila Hawes Award and the Georgia Writers Association Award. Their book Landscapes for the People: George Alexander Grant\, First Chief Photographer of the National Park Service received the INDIEFAB Gold Medal. DESCRIPTION:On the Circuit: Networks of Black Entertainment in Georgia\nThe Bartow History Museum will host a special roundtable program\, On the Circuit: Networks of Black Entertainment in Georgia\, exploring the history and legacy of the Chitlin Circuit and its vital role in providing safe performance spaces for Black entertainers during segregation. \nIn 2024\, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) received a grant from the Fox Theatre in Atlanta to develop a historic context for the proposed Georgia Chitlin Circuit Heritage Trail. From the 1920s through the mid-1960s\, the Chitlin Circuit functioned as a statewide network of tent shows\, theaters\, and juke joints that allowed Black performers to tour and perform safely across the South. \nThe program will feature a panel of experts involved in the heritage trail project. Mary Wilson Joseph\, Community Outreach Coordinator with DCA\, will introduce the initiative and outline its goals. Historian Renee’ Donnell of New South Associates will present findings from this year’s study\, highlighting research methods and notable Chitlin Circuit venues across Georgia. SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: First Footsteps of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:From Slavery to Service: Black U.S. Soldiers in the Civil War\nThe Bartow History Museum will host historian Brad Quinlin for a powerful presentation examining the lives and service of formerly enslaved men who became U.S. soldiers during the Civil War. \nIn 1864\, these newly freed men were assigned as stretcher bearers during the Atlanta Campaign\, moving across the battlefields of Resaca\, Kennesaw Mountain\, Vinings Station\, and Atlanta. Under fire\, they risked their lives to save wounded Union soldiers\, playing a critical yet often overlooked role in the war effort. \nDuring the program\, Quinlin will share the stories of William Tucker\, Matthew Moore\, George Wilson\, Cleve Berq\, and others\, tracing their journeys from slavery to freedom to military service. Drawing from personal accounts and historical documentation\, the presentation highlights the courage\, resilience\, and humanity of these men during and after the war. \nQuinlin’s work is grounded in more than 30 years of research and over 500\,000 documents collected from the National Archives in Washington\, D.C.\, bringing depth and clarity to a chapter of Civil War history that deserves wider recognition. \nAbout the Speaker\nBrad Quinlin is a lifelong student of American history with a focus on the Civil War. He has worked on 32 film and television productions\, including Glory\, Gettysburg\, Andersonville\, and The Perfect Tribute\, and appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? as a guide and research advisor. He was the lead researcher for the award-winning Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield film One Last Mountain and has contributed to National Geographic’s Diggers and The Untold Story of the Civil War. \nA Master Volunteer with the National Park Service\, Quinlin has logged more than 10\,000 volunteer hours\, with his research featured in exhibits at the Atlanta History Center and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. The program will explore the life and work of M.W.H. “Alphabet” Collins\, including his role in founding the Georgia Institute of Genetics. Following the lecture\, attendees are invited to the Bartow History Museum for the unveiling of a new sculpture of Collins created by Julia Trawick Knight\, which will later be installed on the Cartersville campus of Georgia Highlands College. \nAdmission:\n\nFree and open to the public\, with refreshments provided\, and reservations are encouraged\n\nAbout the Speakers\nMary Norton has been an active and dedicated member of the Etowah Valley Historical Society since 1972. Alongside Dr. Bob Norton\, she has provided decades of leadership\, conducted in-depth historical research\, and delivered engaging presentations and events at Valley View. Her commitment to preserving and sharing local history has earned her recognition\, including the EVHS Lifetime Achievement Award. \nJulia Trawick Knight is a figurative sculptor with extensive experience in both private and public commissions. She developed her artistic foundation through studies at the University of the South in Sewanee\, Tennessee; Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota\, Florida; and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her early influences include classical Greek and Roman sculpture\, European works from the Renaissance through the modern era\, and American art of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nKnight further refined her style through mentorships with Leslie T. Posey\, Eugene Daub\, and\, most significantly\, Stanley Bleifeld in Pietrasanta\, Italy.
