DESCRIPTION:Uncovering the Legacy of M.W.H. “Alphabet” Collins and Georgia’s Agricultural Revolution\nThe Bartow History Museum invites the public to a special evening lecture on Thursday\, June 25\, at 7 p.m. Mary Norton will present on the life and work of M.W.H. “Alphabet” Collins\, including the founding of the Georgia Institute of Genetics and the history of the former Georgia Institute of Genetics seed processing barn. Once located at the center of groundbreaking cotton research\, the now-abandoned barn served as a key site in Collins’ pioneering work in agricultural genetics. \nDuring the lecture\, attendees will learn about Collins’ lasting impact on Georgia’s cotton economy from 1916 through the 1970s and how his work continues to influence agriculture in Georgia today. Norton will also explore why Collins became known as one of Georgia’s best-kept historical secrets and discuss the significance of the Georgia Institute of Genetics to Bartow County’s history and future. Through the story of Alphabet Collins\, guests will gain a deeper understanding of the people\, research\, and innovations that helped shape modern agriculture in Georgia. \nAdmission is free for museum members and $9 for non-members. \nAbout the Speaker\nMary Norton has been an active and dedicated member of the Etowah Valley Historical Society since 1972. SUMMARY:Pick & Paint: Barn Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Hands-On Barn Quilt Workshop Comes to Bartow History Museum!\nJoin us at the Bartow History Museum for a Barn Quilt Painting Class as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by creating a beautiful patriotic 2×2 work of art that you can display indoors or outdoors. No experience is necessary. \nParticipants will choose one of the quilt patterns displayed below\, and we will prepare each lightweight\, weather-resistant ACM board in advance with the selected design already drawn for painting. Paints and supplies will be provided. When properly sealed\, your finished barn quilt will withstand rain or shine\, making it perfect for outdoor display. Class size is limited. Please wear clothing you do not mind getting paint on and bring a hair dryer with a cool setting.
