DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled Date – Saturday\, September 19\, 2026\nPreserving the Past: Historic Cemetery Workshop Teaches Care for Bartow’s Stories in Stone!\nThe Bartow History Museum invites community members\, history enthusiasts\, genealogists\, and preservation advocates to discover the importance of protecting local history during the Historic Cemetery Preservation Workshop on Saturday\, September 12\, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. \nLed by preservationist Paige Jennings\, this hands-on workshop will explore the history and significance of historic cemeteries while providing participants with practical techniques for the proper care and preservation of historic headstones and markers. \nThe morning will begin at the Bartow History Museum\, where Jennings will discuss the cultural importance of cemeteries\, common causes of monument deterioration\, and preservation methods that help protect these irreplaceable landmarks. Following the discussion\, participants will travel to Puckett Cemetery in Emerson\, Georgia\, for an on-site demonstration and hands-on instruction in proper cleaning and maintenance techniques. \nHistoric cemeteries serve as important records of the people\, communities\, and events that shaped our past. Through this educational program\, participants will gain valuable preservation skills while helping ensure these meaningful places remain protected for future generations. \nWhether you are interested in genealogy\, local history\, historic preservation\, or simply want to learn how to care for these important community landmarks\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with history in a hands-on way. \nSpace is limited\, and advance registration is encouraged. ANDY MCGILL EXPLORES THE HISTORY OF GARLAND MOUNTAIN\nThe stories of North Georgia’s past come to life during an evening lecture at the Bartow History Museum featuring Dr. Andy McGill and his book\, Cherokees\, Gold Mining\, and Moonshining: A Brief History of Garland Mountain\, Georgia. \nMcGill will explore the rich and complex history of Garland Mountain and the surrounding North Georgia region\, bringing together stories of the people\, events\, and industries that shaped the area. His presentation will trace pivotal moments in Cherokee and Georgia history\, including the region’s role in the Georgia Gold Rush of the 1820s\, the expansion of railroads and industry\, and the impact of the Civil War on North Georgia. \nThe lecture will also explore fascinating local stories\, including the Great Locomotive Chase\, the development of 19th-century railroads\, and the story of a notorious bank robber who grew up near Adairsville. Together\, these stories reveal the many people and events that contributed to the unique character of North Georgia. \nAdmission is $9 for non-members; free for museum members. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr. Andy McGill has been interested in American history since childhood. As a junior in high school\, he won his class award for history. He has lived in North Georgia since 2006 and has spent years researching local history\, uncovering fascinating details and weaving them into compelling stories. His work was recently published in Georgia Backroads magazine. \nHis book\, Cherokees\, Gold Mining and Moonshining\, examines several fascinating chapters of Cherokee and Bartow history\, including the history of the Cherokee Nation in North Georgia\, the Great Locomotive Chase\, the impact of 19th-century railroads on industry\, and the story of a famous bank robber who grew up near Adairsville.
