Evening Lecture: From Cherokees to Moonshine – The Story of Garland Mountain

FROM CHEROKEES TO MOONSHINE: DR. ANDY MCGILL EXPLORES THE HISTORY OF GARLAND MOUNTAIN
The stories of North Georgia’s past come to life during an evening lecture at the Bartow History Museum featuring Dr. Andy McGill and his book, Cherokees, Gold Mining, and Moonshining: A Brief History of Garland Mountain, Georgia.
McGill will explore the rich and complex history of Garland Mountain and the surrounding North Georgia region, bringing together stories of the people, events, and industries that shaped the area. His presentation will trace pivotal moments in Cherokee and Georgia history, including the region’s role in the Georgia Gold Rush of the 1820s, the expansion of railroads and industry, and the impact of the Civil War on North Georgia.
The lecture will also explore fascinating local stories, including the Great Locomotive Chase, the development of 19th-century railroads, and the story of a notorious bank robber who grew up near Adairsville. Together, these stories reveal the many people and events that contributed to the unique character of North Georgia.
Admission is $9 for non-members; free for museum members.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Andy McGill has been interested in American history since childhood. As a junior in high school, he won his class award for history. He has lived in North Georgia since 2006 and has spent years researching local history, uncovering fascinating details and weaving them into compelling stories. His work was recently published in Georgia Backroads magazine.
His book, Cherokees, Gold Mining and Moonshining, examines several fascinating chapters of Cherokee and Bartow history, including the history of the Cherokee Nation in North Georgia, the Great Locomotive Chase, the impact of 19th-century railroads on industry, and the story of a famous bank robber who grew up near Adairsville. The book marks McGill’s first full-length publication.
