Cherokee Judicial Circuit: The Early Organization and Establishment of Constitutional Justice

The Bartow History Museum invites visitors to explore the origins of constitutional justice in North Georgia through a program examining the formation of the Cherokee Judicial Circuit.

One of the oldest judicial circuits in Georgia, the Cherokee Judicial Circuit – now encompassing Bartow and Gordon Counties – was established in 1832. At its creation, the circuit covered a vast region that had once been the Cherokee Nation.

This program explores the dramatic transition that followed as Georgia asserted sovereignty over the area and began establishing a structured system of law and order, replacing earlier forms of frontier justice.
