Educating the Upcountry: Higher Education in Antebellum Cass (Bartow) County-Part 1
The Cassville Female College
Join us on March 18 at noon at the Bartow History Museum, as we welcome Matthew Gramling to our Lunch and Learn series. Gramling is a research volunteer at the Bartow History Museum and Etowah Valley Historical Society. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Oglethorpe University and Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Gramling will discuss the history of higher education in antebellum Bartow County, focusing specifically on the role and influence of the Cassville Female College in the development of North Georgia. As a native and resident of Cassville, Matthew has had a deep and abiding interest in this once thriving antebellum community since childhood. Participants will hear about the history of the antebellum women’s education movement in the American South, the role of Cassville Female College in shaping southern womanhood in Upcountry Georgia, and the drive for southern educational independence. The program is free for members and included in the price of admission to the museum for non-members. Table space is available for those wishing to bring a lunch.
